Recurly

Subscription billing built around churn reduction. ML-powered dunning, revenue recovery, and subscriber analytics.

Billing Platform | Best for: Subscription-heavy businesses focused on reducing churn | Website →

Overview

Recurly is a subscription billing platform that treats churn reduction as a first-class problem. While most billing tools focus on getting payments in, Recurly focuses on keeping subscribers paying — through ML-powered dunning, automatic card updaters, and subscriber health analytics.

It sits on top of your payment processor (Stripe, Braintree, Adyen, and others) and manages the subscription lifecycle. The core value proposition: you’ll recover more failed payments and retain more subscribers than you would managing dunning yourself.

Best For

Subscription-heavy businesses where involuntary churn is a measurable revenue problem. Media, SaaS, streaming, and membership businesses with large subscriber bases get the most value from Recurly’s revenue recovery engine.

Strengths

  • ML-powered dunning is the differentiator. Recurly’s intelligent retry engine learns from payment patterns across its network to time retries optimally. This is not a simple “retry every 3 days” scheduler
  • Revenue recovery at scale. Account updater integrations automatically refresh expired card details before they cause failed payments. For high-volume subscription businesses, this compounds
  • Flexible subscription management. Trials, coupons, add-ons, plan migrations, proration — the subscription lifecycle is well covered
  • Multi-gateway, multi-currency. Works across payment processors and supports international billing without locking you into one gateway

Trade-offs

  • Subscriptions only. Recurly is built for recurring revenue. If you need significant one-time payment, marketplace, or e-commerce capabilities alongside subscriptions, it’s the wrong tool
  • Usage-based billing is limited. If your pricing model involves metered or consumption-based billing, Recurly won’t handle it well. Look at Orb or Metronome instead
  • Smaller ecosystem. Fewer third-party integrations and developer community resources than Stripe. You’ll find less tooling built around Recurly
  • Not a merchant of record. Like Chargebee and Stripe, tax compliance remains your responsibility
