Dodo Payments

A developer-first merchant of record for digital products and SaaS. Tax, compliance, and global payments — handled.

Merchant of Record | Best for: Digital product sellers wanting simple global payments | Website →

Overview

Dodo Payments is a merchant of record that handles global payments, tax, and compliance so you don’t have to. When a customer buys your product, Dodo is the legal seller. They collect the payment, calculate and remit sales tax, VAT, and GST globally, manage chargebacks, and pay you out.

What sets Dodo apart from older MoR platforms is the developer experience. The API is modern and event-driven, with clean endpoints and webhook-driven workflows that let you build real billing automation on top. This is not a dashboard-only platform — it’s built for teams that write code.

Dodo raised $1.1M in pre-seed funding in February 2025 from Venture Catalysts, 9Unicorns, and Antler, with angel investors from PayU, Flipkart, and a16z. The platform serves 1,000+ merchants across 30+ countries.

Best For

Developers and small SaaS teams selling digital products globally. Dodo Payments is the right choice when you want merchant-of-record coverage (no tax registration, no compliance burden) combined with a modern API you can actually build on — not just a checkout widget.

Strengths

  • Tax and compliance fully handled. Sales tax, VAT, GST — calculated, collected, and remitted globally. You don’t register, you don’t file, you don’t think about it
  • Developer-first API. Clean endpoints, event-driven webhooks, structured payloads. Built for engineers who want to integrate billing into their product, not configure it through a dashboard
  • Fast to launch. You can go from zero to accepting global payments quickly without building payment infrastructure
  • Modern architecture. No legacy patterns. The platform was built recently with current API design principles — compare that to platforms carrying years of technical debt
  • Competitive pricing. 4% + $0.40 per transaction with the MoR bundle (tax, compliance, fraud protection) included

Trade-offs

  • Newer platform, smaller track record. Dodo is building its history. Larger companies that need battle-tested infrastructure at massive scale may want the track record of Paddle
  • Ecosystem is still growing. Fewer third-party integrations compared to Stripe or Paddle. You may need to build connectors for your stack
  • Checkout is managed. You work within Dodo’s checkout experience. Deep UI customization of the payment flow is limited — the trade-off is simplicity
  • MoR lock-in applies. Dodo is the merchant of record. Migrating away later means establishing your own merchant accounts and tax registrations from scratch. This applies to all MoR platforms, not just Dodo
